Orthodontic Retainers in Corpus Christi & Alice, TX

What Are Retainers?

Retainers are custom appliances worn after orthodontic treatment to hold teeth in their new positions while bone and gums adapt. Your orthodontist will recommend the style (Essix or Vivera retainers), wear schedule, and follow-up plan based on your bite, age, and treatment. With consistent use and good care, retainers help ensure your straight smile lasts for years to come.

Why Are Retainers So Important?

Retainers are important because, for a period of time after treatment, the gums, bone, and ligaments around your teeth are still remodeling. Retainers hold everything in place while that stabilization happens, so your new smile doesn’t drift back. They also help keep your bite comfortable, protect the spacing and alignment you worked hard to achieve, and reduce the chance you’ll need retreatment later.

Types of Retainers We Offer at Vela Orthodontics

We offer two types of clear retainers that your orthodontist will help you choose from:

These thin, clear trays fit snugly over your teeth and are nearly invisible. They’re comfortable, easy to wear at night, and great for protecting alignment and enamel from minor wear. You’ll receive care instructions to keep them clean and clear.

Designed for long‑term durability, Vivera retainers are precision‑made from digital 3D models. They’re ideal if you want a premium, clear option with extra strength made by the same company that makes Invisalign® clear aligners.

How Long Will I Wear My Retainers?

Every smile is different, but generally, wearing retainers is a long-term commitment. Many patients wear their retainers full-time after first finishing active treatment and then gradually transition to nighttime-only wear. Your orthodontist will provide guidance on how long and often you’ll need to wear your aligners.

Caring for Your Clear Retainers

By properly caring for your retainers, you’ll keep them looking as new as when you first got them!

Here are some clear retainer care tips:

  • Clean your clear retainers daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle antibacterial soap
  • Avoid using hot water to clean them, since heat can warp your retainers
  • Always store your retainers in their case when they’re not in use
  • Keep your retainers away from pets (they love to use them as a chew toy)

If your retainer feels uncomfortable, no longer fits, or is damaged, contact us immediately. Early replacement can help prevent unwanted tooth movement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers

Retainers hold alignment, but they don’t move teeth significantly. For minor relapses in treatment, short-term clear aligner treatment can re‑refine your smile, followed by new retainers to maintain the result.

If something happens to your retainer, contact us right away. We can often remake a replacement from your saved digital scan. Delays increase the chance of teeth shifting, so the sooner you act, the better.
