Common Orthodontic Emergencies We Treat

Even small fixes can make a big difference. Here are common issues we can help with:

Everyday movement can shift a wire’s position, and sometimes it pokes your cheek. We’ll reposition or trim the wire and smooth any rough edges. Orthodontic wax can help in the short‑term, but don’t cut wires on braces at home unless we advise it.

Chewy or crunchy foods, or even normal wear and tear, can loosen a bracket. If it’s still on the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax. We’ll secure or replace it in the office to keep your plan on track.

New appliances like braces or clear aligners can rub at first. We provide guidance on easy fixes below. If a sore persists, we can adjust your appliances for comfort.

If an aligner tray or retainer is lost or damaged, contact us. We’ll advise the best step, such as moving backwards or forwards in your aligner treatment, and order a replacement if needed.

Handling Orthodontic Emergencies at Home: What You Can Do

Using Orthodontic Wax

After your treatment starts, we’ll send you home with some orthodontic wax. Wax can cushion sharp edges on brackets, ties, or appliance parts. Dry the area, roll a small piece of wax between clean fingers, and press it over the spot.

Managing Soreness

Mild tenderness is common with orthodontic treatment, especially after adjustments. Try a soft‑food diet for a day and consider over‑the‑counter pain relievers as directed. You can also rinse with saltwater for sores or eat cold foods to relieve discomfort.
