Football season is a big deal across Corpus Christi, Alice, and the surrounding Coastal Bend communities. From youth leagues and middle school teams to Friday night lights, local athletes spend months preparing to compete, support their teammates, and enjoy the game they love.

For athletes with braces, a little extra preparation can help protect their teeth, lips, and orthodontic appliances throughout the season. Wearing the right mouthguard and knowing how to respond to a game-day injury can make an unexpected situation much easier to manage.

Why Mouthguards Matter During Football Season

Football is a contact sport, which means players may experience hits to the face or jaw during practices and games. Even with a helmet and face mask, the teeth and soft tissues inside the mouth can still be vulnerable.

A properly fitted mouthguard helps absorb and distribute the force of an impact, which may help reduce the risk of:

  • Chipped, cracked, or knocked-out teeth
  • Cuts to the lips, cheeks, or tongue
  • Damage to brackets and wires
  • Injuries caused when braces press against the inside of the mouth
  • Trauma to the jaw

Mouthguards are important for every football player, but they are especially important for athletes who are currently wearing braces.

Choosing the Right Mouthguard With Braces

Athletes with braces should use a mouthguard designed to fit over orthodontic appliances. Unlike a standard mouthguard, an orthodontic mouthguard provides extra room around the brackets and allows space for the teeth to move throughout treatment. Some tightly fitted “boil-and-bite” mouthguards may become uncomfortable or stop fitting properly as the teeth shift. They may also place unnecessary pressure on brackets and wires if they are not shaped correctly.

When choosing a mouthguard for your child, look for one that is specifically designed for braces, fits comfortably without pressing on brackets, and has enough room to accommodate tooth movement. Mouthguards should also be checked regularly. Replace the mouthguard if it becomes torn, worn down, difficult to clean, or too tight after an orthodontic adjustment.

The team at Vela Orthodontics can help families determine what type of mouthguard may work best during treatment.

Orthodontic Emergencies From Playing Football With Braces

Even when an athlete wears the right protective equipment, injuries can still happen. Many orthodontic problems are manageable until our office can evaluate them. Common problems with your braces include broken brackets, bent or poking wires, and mouth sores. Vela Orthodontics knows how to treat these issues if they occur, so your child can get back on the field quickly.

Tips for Protecting Your Smile All Season

A few consistent habits can help football players protect their smiles and stay on track with orthodontic treatment:

Wear a Mouthguard Every Time

Many injuries happen during practice, when athletes may be less likely to wear all of their protective equipment. A mouthguard should be used whenever contact or impact is possible.

Keep the Mouthguard Clean

Rinse the mouthguard before and after each use. Brush it gently with a toothbrush and cool water, then allow it to dry before storing it in a ventilated case. Avoid leaving it in a hot car, especially during the warm South Texas football season. Heat can cause the mouthguard to warp and affect its fit.

Do Not Chew on the Mouthguard

Chewing can quickly weaken or damage a mouthguard. Instruct your athlete not to chew on the mouthguard, and replace it if it appears damaged.

Continue Brushing and Flossing

Busy practice and travel schedules can make oral hygiene more challenging. Athletes with braces should continue brushing after meals when possible and flossing carefully each day.

Keep Orthodontic Appointments

Regular visits allow your orthodontist to monitor treatment, adjust appliances, and identify concerns before they become bigger problems.

Let the Vela Orthodontics team know if the athlete experiences a significant hit to the mouth or notices a change in how the teeth, braces, or bite feel.

Supporting Football Players Across the Coastal Bend

Football season should be about teamwork, school spirit, and enjoying every moment on the field. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of dental and orthodontic injuries without getting in the way of the game.
